Brett Crutherstone’s father never allowed her to go to school and beats her and her mother. She’s had to home-school herself and did an exceptional job, but has no peers, boyfriend, or social life, and has never once sarcastically said, “Whatever!” The violence at home leads Brett to try and hire private investigator Ketch to hurt her father. He seeks less violent ways and she likes the compassion and understanding with which he does his job. A robbery and murders add real challenges to him in their small Texas town. She watches, learns, and decides detecting might just be in her future. Brett applies her relentless curiosity and aims to become become his detecting sidekick. When they come across a live Bengal tiger kept in a too-small back yard cage, she relates and knows just how that poor beast feels. Someone needs to do something.
