“Freedom never seems to mean much…to those who are free.” What would you risk to escape slavery? Your family, friends…even your life?
This is what Dringle, a fourteen-year-old bunji wonders, as he trots behind his master’s wagon on the way home from town, once again impatient with why he’s always been a slave.
It’s a whole generation after the deeds of young heroes who came before him, some of whom escaped the rule of the Starkhon invaders. They succeeded in rescuing their friends, some of the local bunjis, from Starkhon rule. But they left decades ago, and now all bunjis born in the land of Kur are Starkhon slaves. Dringle is one of these bunjis, a youth born into slavery, never tasting freedom.
Until Dringle’s grandmother tells him a wonderful secret, something she’s kept inside herself until she’s about to leave their world for a better place.
If only Dringle can come to believe it himself. And if his friends can help him find the courage to move forward; to escape and seek out his destiny.
