SNEAK PEEK: When she entered the empty room, the sole illumination came from louvered blinds filtering the harsh glare of streetlights. She squinted as her eyes swept the area. To her shock, she saw a body on the floor. She gasped as her heart leaped into her throat. For an instant, she imagined the person to be dead. But her exclamation of surprise roused the immobile figure. The man sat up and rubbed his neck, stiff from sleeping on the hard floor. “Who are you?” he asked groggily. Her relief at seeing he was alive quickly switched to anger. “What are you doing here?” she demanded. He grabbed the knapsack and jumped to his feet. His eyes darted past her, and he saw she was alone. “Never mind about me. How did you get in?” Surprised by his question, she was too startled to respond. Glancing out the window, he pointed a grubby finger at the sign in the yard. “I bet that’s you.” “Leave at once,” she ordered without confirming his supposition. “You have no right to be here.” “No need to get your dander up.” He rubbed a hand across his face. “I was just catching some shut eye. I didn’t do no damage.” “What do you call breaking in?” she asked, in a haughty manner. “I’d hardly call it breaking in.” He jerked his head toward the sliding door. “In case you didn’t know, that slider is busted. But don’t worry, I’ll leave.” As he edged toward the exit, her gaze fell on the pouch he clutched. She saw the outline of a gun and shuddered involuntarily. Her previous indignation was replaced by an immediate desire to flee the premises. “What’s the matter? You look like you saw a ghost.” He followed her eyes to the pocket of his backpack. She turned away to avoid his steely stare. “It’s late. I should leave.” “You’re in a sudden hurry to go.” He grinned toothily and patted the gun. “Is this what spooked you?” “I need to get home.” She hoped her voice didn’t sound as shaky as she felt. “My family is expecting me.” “You ain’t thinking of reporting me for breaking in, are you?” “Why would I? As you say, you didn’t do any damage. The door was broken before you came.” He looked more closely at the car in the driveway. “What are you doin’ here, anyway? From the look of your ride, this ain’t your usual place of doing business.” He scooped the discarded flier from the floor. After reading the card stapled to the front, he whistled through the gap between his teeth. “Your office is in a fancy part of town.” She ignored his observation and started toward the door. “My husband will be wondering what happened. I promised to take pizza home for dinner.” He grabbed her arm. “Not so fast, lady.” When she tried to pull away, he gripped more tightly. “I ain’t finished with you.” “What do you intend to do?” she asked nervously. “I haven’t decided yet. But I’m beginning to think this could turn into a bigger payday than I expected.” The surroundings instantly closed in on her. Her knees felt wobbly as the room began to spin. She experienced the lightheadedness of a panic attack. READERS ARE HOOKED ON RAYNA'S BOOKS: "I thought I had figured out who the murderer was but was surprised by who it really was."
