The Music Inside
Listing Details
Heidi Murphy has been raised by a religious family and spent the last three years of high school at a private Christian boarding school. At 19 she is living in Pennsylvania, married, bored, directionless, and apathetic. After a devastating personal tragedy, her best friend's invitation to visit San Francisco in 1989 changes all of that. She begins a completely different new life in the eclectic and liberal city by the bay, reinvents herself in the debauchery of the rock and roll culture that she immerses herself immersed in, and struggles to define her identity. As the pop metal of the 1980s fades into the alternative music scene of the 1990s, her new job and experiences in the city change not only her core belief system and her outlook on her life, but eventually begin to give her a sense of purpose and belonging in the world. With some help from her friends she begins to learn how to believe in her own inner voice, create a satisfying new life for herself, and define herself apart from the expectations of her family and even from the music she loves.
